MULTIMEDIA TECNOLOGY

INTRODUCTION:

Multimedia is being used increasingly to provide compute based instruction. Multimedia information helps us to learn. It may be help to us to learn more information more quickly compared to traditional classroom lecture.

Multimedia is the use of text, graphics, animation, pictures, video, and sound to present information. Since these media can now be integrated using a virtual explosion of computer based multimedia instructional applications.

CONCEPT:

Multimedia is media and content that uses a combination of different content forms. The term can be as a noun (a medium with multiple content forms) or as adjective describing a medium content forms. The term is used in contrast to media which use only rudimentary computer display such as text only, or traditional form of printed or hand- produced material. Multimedia includes a combination of text, audio, still images, animation, video, or interactively content forms.

DEFINITION OF MULTIMEDIA

Multimedia is nothing but the processing and presentation of information in a more structured and understandable manner using more than one media such as text, graphics, animation, audio and video.

According to Roblyer and suchweier, 2003;

“Multimedia has not always been associated with computers, there merging of increasingly powerful computer based authoring tools with internet connectivity that is responsible for the growing interest and use of multimedia instruction.”

“Multimedia means an individual or a small group using a computer to internet with information that is represented in several media by repeatedly selecting what to see and near next.”

                                                        -Agnew, 1976

MULTIMEDIA AND INTERNET:

Multimedia are increasingly associated with the Internet, which offers both delivery advantages and challenges to user advantages arise from the Internet’s enormous capacity to link and interconnect, but there are potentially serious Mayer (2001) concluded that successful learning requires student to perform five actions, with direct implications for the design of effective multimedia instruction.

·       Select relevant words from the presented text or narration.

·       Select relevant images from the presented illustrations.

·       Organise the selected words into a coherent verbal representation.

·       Organise selected images into a coherent visual representation

·       Integrate the visual and verbal representations with prior knowledge.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MULTIMEDIA

                          TECHNOLOGY

Multimedia is characterized by the presence of text, pictures, sound, animation and video, some or all of which are organised into some coherent programme. There are following characteristics:-

·       Drill and practice to master basic skills

·       Development of writing skills

·       Problem solving

·       Understanding abstract math tics and science concepts

·       Simulation in Science and mathematics

·       Manipulation of data

·       Access for teacher and students in remote locations

·       Individualized and cooperative learning

·       Interactivity and involvement of participants in multimedia system

·       Identify multimedia software appropriate to manipulating particular types of data

·       Compare and contrast and multimedia versions with similar content

·       Use multimedia system in an interactive way and to identify how they control the presentation of information

·       Distinguish between different approaches to animation including path- based and cell- based through practical investigations

·       Describe the role and skills of the people who design multimedia systems
